Organize My Life, Part One: Planning

Organize My Life, Part One: Planning

One of my biggest pitfalls as a blogger mother human being is that I am chronically disorganized. I am changing that this year, for once and for all, and for good!  I will organize and conquer!

It’ll be a step-by-step process, to be sure, because I needed change to come in small doses.  I used to be a straight up slob when I was younger, so just the fact that my house is clean as an adult is probably beyond my parents wildest dreams.  It is cluttered, but it is clean.  So my need to organize is mental as much as it is physical.  When my house and work space is cluttered and disorganized, my brain feels the same way.  When it’s organized and tidy, I can concentrate and work and create roughly 1000 times more efficiently.  I don’t know if it’s like that for everyone, but that’s certainly how it is for me.  I would like to have a more productive 2017 so my first step is to PLAN and organize.

So, naturally the first thing I went to buy was a planner for the year. This is where all of the stuff I need to remember will go, and it’s portable! So I can carry it in my purse to write down appointments and check for conflicts in my schedule on the go.  I got the academic one, since it overlapped from 2016 to 2017.  The Mister has lots of doctors appointments, and oftentimes they are scheduled 6-12 months out.  I’ll get another one in the summer when I’m out buying the kids’ school supplies.

Next, I found a nice calendar for the family. This is my go-to calendar for family things. I love that I can write our names on the side and even as the month changes, we all have our own lines to write things on. It really helps to keep organized and know who is working, who has appointments, practices, recitals, etc.

Third, I shopped for a calendar for my blog and social media. It serves as both an editorial calendar and then a note pad for all my random ideas about what to post on social media. Believe it or not, I am actually trying to sync things–like make my blog post, then post relevant things to social media. It’s a big step for me. LOL I know it’s simple blogger 101 and I should have been doing it all along, but ya know, I march to the beat of a different drum. As a matter of fact, I have my own drummer (and he’s a dumbass who can’t keep the beat).

Next up, I bought pretty pens. My favorite are these sharpie pens in awesome colors. They don’t bleed through the pages either! Colored pens just make me….happy. Thus, I am much more likely to continue my good habit of using them because they make me so chipper it’s like a treat for myself. But SERIOUSLY, who doesn’t love pretty pens?  If that sad person exists, I don’t want to know them–they are not my kind of people!  {The link above for the sharpies–if you click on it, they also have a “planner bundle” which includes the same calendar I use for my blog!}

Finally, I’ve started working on some checklists for myself.  So far, I’ve got a daily “to do” checklist and a blog post planning checklist.  I’m working on a meal planning/meal prepping sheet next.  It’s becoming more and more important for us to plan our meals due to dietary restrictions and allergies.  I have very much been flying by the seat of my pants for our dinners for awhile.  I hit the grocery store a minimum of four times per week.  I spend waaaay more money than I should, and I spend too much of my precious and valuable time trying to think of what I can make right now for dinner.  So that definitely needs to change, for my sanity.

That pretty much sums up my plans to get organized.  I’m sure by this time next year I’ll have even more plans to get organized, but for this year, these will help tremendously!  I hope to share the meal planning sheet once it’s done because I think that will be valuable for everyone.  The other checklists I’ve personalized for myself, but perhaps I can come up with a more generic version that would be suitable for everybody to use.  If so, I’ll make that available to you too.

Schedules

Fact: I am not good at scheduling myself.

It’s like a madhouse around here.  One week into school and we never know who is coming or going or where anyone is at.  It’s making me crazy–like on the verge of schizo.

Schedules-01

I really need to go buy a planner.  Write all my things down in it so I can just cross them off as I go.  A calendar so the kids can write all their crap down too.

I think it’s a cardinal sin to admit to being unorganized on the internet, and certainly so if you’re a blogger.  Give me your best organizational ideas!  PLEASE!
